Kindergarten at
Newport Children's School is a place for children to expand their love of
learning, their general knowledge, their ability to get along with others, and
their interest in reaching out to the world. Our kindergarten paves the way
for a successful transition from preschool to primary grades by offering a
program designed to encourage your child's physical, emotional and
intellectual growth.
Language Arts
Our philosophy of beginning reading is to incorporate phonics, literature
oral and written instruction into a meaningful context.
We utilize Rigby's Literacy by Design, a researched-based program for
emerging and developing readers. Our program guides students through
important skills and strategies while building knowledge and abilities so that
reading and writing become integral parts of the kindergarten day.
Low teacher student ratios allow us to individualize teaching so that
students are encouraged and supported.
Math
Our school uses the Scott Foresman's Investigations curriculum.
Investigations offers activity-based mathematics that encourage students to
think creatively, develop their own problem-solving strategies, and work
cooperatively with their classmates. Many Investigations activities involve
engaging games that reinforce students' understanding of important
mathematical concepts and skills.
We also individualize the program in order to meet the needs of the
children. Children who are ready for more advanced concepts are given
instruction to continue developing their skills.
Science
Our goal for science in the Kindergarten
program is to expose the students to a
variety of scientific materials and concepts.
The science program focuses on life science,
earth science and physical science. The
curriculum uses a hands-on approach that
engages the student in each lesson.
Foreign Language
Our students receive Spanish instruction
twice a week. Our instructors are Early Childhood educators who are native
speakers. Our classes focus on vocabulary and conversation, songs and games
in a way that is fun and promotes an appreciation for many cultures as well as
developing an "ear" for new sounds.
Social Studies
Our Social studies curriculum is integrated and extends from our Literacy
Program. We study concepts foremost to our children's lives such as families,
neighborhoods and all the many ways each child is an integral part of their
community. Children learn about differences and similarities of their own
culture and others'.
Social Competencies Development Program
Our kindergarten program uses Committee
for Children's Second Step to increase social
competence in children.
Socially competent children cooperate, show
consideration for others, manage their
feelings appropriately and have some
success in solving problems. Our program
teaches skills in the areas of empathy,
emotion management impulse control,
emotion regulation, anger management and
social problem solving.
Physical Education and Cooperative Sport
In our PE classes children have fun while developing coordination and physical
skills.
Children learn the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. Good
sportsmanship in kindergarten is as simple and as important as taking turns
and recognizing others during a game.
Humanities Enrichments
Our school curriculum additionally includes dramatics, computer science and,
creative arts.
